RESUMO

Gall anatomical and metabolic peculiarities are determined by the feeding habit of the gall inducer, but develop under the constraints of the host plants. The chewing habit of the Lepidoptera larvae imposes a high impact on the host plant cells, and supposedly drives peculiar structural and histochemical patterns. So, our starting point was the search of such patterns in literature, and the test of these traits on the Andescecidium parrai (Cecidosidae)-Schinus polygama (Anacardiaceae) system, as a case study in Chilean flora. The literature on the structure of lepidopteran galls in the temperate and tropical regions comprises 13 works, describing stems as the most frequent host organs, followed by leaves, buds, and flowers. As common structural traits of Lepidoptera galls, the literature converge in describing the processes of cell hypertrophy and hyperplasia, resulting in a variable number of common storage parenchyma layers, interspersed by the redifferentiated sclerenchyma, vascular, and typical nutritive cells around the larval chamber. These nutritive cells accumulate lipids and proteins, which support the lepidopteran larvae nutrition. As expected, the A. parrai galls follow the patterns herein described for the lepidoptera-induced galls, but with peculiarities associated with its host organ. Even though the Lepidoptera galls have destructive mouthparts and can induce large and complex galls, they cannot alter important conservative features of their hosts' organs.

Gall cytological and histochemical features established by the constant feeding activity of the associated gall inducer may be changed due to the attack of parasitoids. We accessed two tri-trophic systems involving the globoid bivalve-shaped gall on Mimosa gemmulata Barneby (Fabaceae) and its galling undescribed species of Lopesia (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), which may be ectoparasitized by Torymus sp. (Hymenoptera: Torymidae) or endoparasitized by a polyembryonic Platygastridae (Hymenoptera), as models of study. The ectoparasitoid species paralyzes and kills Lopesia sp. larva, which stops the feeding stimuli, while the endoparasitoid larvae feed in Lopesia sp. larva body and keep it alive for a certain time. Our hypothesis is that the time lapse of Lopesia sp. feeding impairment by the two parasitoids will cause distinct cytological and histochemical responses in the ecto- and endoparasitized galls compared to the non-parasitized condition. In both parasitoidism cases, the impairment of the feeding activity of the galling Lopesia sp. directs the common storage and nutritive cells toward a similar process of induced cell death, involving cell collapse and loss of membrane integrity. The cell metabolism is maintained mainly by mitochondria, and by the translocation of lipids from the common storage tissue, via plasmodesmata, through the living sclereids of the mechanical zone toward the nutritive tissue. Accordingly, the parasitoid impairment on the feeding activity of Lopesia sp. larvae causes precocious senescence, but similar cytological alterations, and no impact over the histochemical profiles, regarding lipids, reactive oxygen species, and secondary metabolites, which support gall metabolism along the parasitoid cycles.

This study inventoried and characterized the richness of galling insects based on gall morphotypes and their host plants in two Cerrado sensu stricto areas of Caetité municipality in Bahia State, Brazil, to aid the identification of galling insects and their host plants, as well as to contribute to the knowledge and conservation of local biodiversity. The survey was conducted in the Moita dos Porcos archaeological site and João Barroca Farm site, adopting the random walking methodology for sampling, during 12 months. We recorded 98 gall morphotypes on 42 plant species belonging to 36 genera and 22 families. Leguminosae, Malpighiaceae and Myrtaceae demonstrated the greatest richness of galls, and the Copaifera langsdorffii was the super-host species, with 16 gall morphotypes. Most galls occur on leaves, and may be globoid, glabrous, grouped, and are usually unilocular, and brown. The galling insects identified belonged to Coleoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera, and Thysanoptera. Eight plant host species and eight gall morphotypes were recorded for the first time in Cerrado areas in Brazil. The areas surveyed demonstrated high richness of gall morphotypes and host plants, evidencing the importance of studying and preserving different areas of the same biome.

Super-host plants are elegant models to evaluate the peculiarities of gall structural and nutritional profiles due to the stimuli of distinct gall inducers in temporal and spatial perspectives. Galls induced by congeneric insects, Lopesia spp. (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) on the same host plant, Mimosa gemmulata Barneby (Fabaceae) were analyzed to estimate if variations of 1 or 2 months in gall lifespans may result in differences over the accumulation of nutritional resources, and their compartmentalization both in cell walls and protoplasm. Mimosa gemmulata hosts four Lopesia-induced galls: the lenticular bivalve-shaped gall (LG) with a 2-month life cycle, the brown lanceolate bivalve-shaped gall (BLG) and the green lanceolate bivalve-shaped gall (GLG) with 3 month-life cycles, and the globoid bivalve-shaped gall (GG) with a 4 month-life cycle. The comparisons among the four Lopesia galls, using anatomical, histometric, histochemical, and immunocytochemical tools, have demonstrated that the longest lifespan of the GG related to its highest increment in structural and nutritional traits compared with the LG, GLG, and BLG. The differences among the tissue stratification and cell wall thickness of the galls with the 2-month and the 3-month lifespans were subtle. However, the GG had thicker cell walls and higher stratification of the common storage tissue, schlerenchymatic layers and typical nutritive tissue than the other three gall morphospecies. The higher tissue thickness of the GG was followed by the formation of a bidirectional gradient of carbohydrates in the protoplasm, and the detection of xyloglucans in cell walls. Current data supported the presumption that the longest the lifespan, the highest the impact over the structural and nutritional metabolism of the Lopesia galls associated to M. gemmulata.

We surveyed insect galls in an area of Cerrado sensu stricto and Gallery forest in the municipality of Caetité (BA) to contribute to current knowledge of the local flora and its associated gall-inducing insects. Monthly collections were made between February/2015 and January/2016, totaling 12 field campaigns (involving two or three people and lasting four hours) that followed an established path through the countryside. A total of 63 gall morphotypes were identified on 47 host plant species belonging to 22 families; 17 morphotypes were found in the Gallery forest and 46 in Cerrado vegetation. The plant families showing the greatest gall richness were Leguminosae (n=15), Myrtaceae (n=9), and Asteraceae (n=7). The species with the greatest number of galls was Mimosa gemmulata Barneby (Leguminosae) (n=3). Most galls were observed on leaves (66%) and stems (24%); they were mostly green (49.3%) or brown (26%), with globoid shapes (39.7%) or marginal roll (17.4%), and were unilocular (87%), glabrous (62%) and isolated (89%). Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) were the principal gall-inducing insects. The associated fauna was principally composed of Hymenoptera. Eight plant taxa were recorded for the first time as hosts of galling fauna.

OBJECTIVE: Prolactin (PRL), a peptide hormone produced by the pituitary gland, is involved in the interaction between the neuroendocrine and immune system. Since dopamine receptor antagonists increase serum levels of PRL, both PRL and dopamine receptors might be involved in the modulation of macrophage activity, providing means of communication between the nervous and immune systems. This study evaluated the effects of PRL and the dopamine antagonist domperidone (DOMP) on macrophage activity of female rats. METHODS: Oxidative burst and phagocytosis of peritoneal macrophages were evaluated by flow cytometry. Samples of peritoneal liquid from female rats were first incubated with PRL (10 and 100 nM) for different periods. The same procedure was repeated to evaluate the effects of DOMP (10 and 100 nM). RESULTS: In vitro incubation of macrophages with 10 nM DOMP decreased oxidative burst, after 30 min, whereas the PMA-induced burst was decreased by DOMP 10 nM after 2 and 4 h. Treatment with PRL (10 and 100 nM) for 30 min decreased oxidative burst and rate of phagocytosis (10 nM). After 2 h of incubation, 10 nM PRL decreased oxidative burst and phagocytosis intensity, but increased the rate of phagocytosis. On the other hand, after 4 h, PRL 10 and 100 nM increased oxidative burst and the rate of phagocytosis, but decreased intensity of phagocytosis. CONCLUSIONS: These observations suggest that macrophage functions are regulated by an endogenous dopaminergic tone. Our data also suggest that both PRL and dopamine exert their action by acting directly on the peritoneal macrophage.

This study aimed at investigating the ways to prevent burns identified by burned patients and their relatives. Data were collected at the Burns Unit of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School Clinical Hospital, University of São Paulo--Brazil by means of interviews with burned patients and their relatives. Four referees categorized data. In order to verify the existence of agreement among the referees with regard to categorization, the non-parametric correlation measure was used--Contingency Coefficient. Fifty-seven people were interviewed: 24 relatives and 33 burned patients. Of the 33 interviewed patients, 18 had suffered accidents at home. Of the 57 interviewees, 11 stated that they could not have avoided the accident causing the burn. Twenty patients and 12 relatives identified risk situations at home or at work and 13 patients and 12 relatives did not identify any types of risk situations. The relatives and patients referred to the following preventive measures for burning accidents: to be attentive to the activities that they perform and to be more careful while handling flammable products.

Os objetivos deste estudo foram investigar os meios de prevenção de queimaduras identificados por pacientes vítimas de queimaduras e por seus familiares. Os dados foram coletados na Unidade de Queimados do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto, mediante a realização de entrevistas com pacientes e seus familiares. Os dados foram categorizados por quatro juízes. Para verificar a existência de concordância entre os juízes, quanto à categorização, foi utilizada a medida não paramétrica de correlação - Coeficiente de Contingência. Foram entrevistados: 24 familiares de pacientes que sofreram queimaduras e 33 pacientes. Dos 33 pacientes entrevistados, 18 sofreram acidentes em ambiente doméstico. Dos 57 entrevistados, 11 afirmaram que não poderiam ter contribuído para evitar o acidente. Vinte pacientes e 12 familiares identificaram situações de risco no ambiente doméstico ou no trabalho, e 13 pacientes e 12 familiares não identificaram qualquer tipo de situação de risco. Os familiares e pacientes apontaram como medidas preventivas de acidentes por queimaduras: estar atento às atividades realizadas e ter cuidado com o manuseio de produtos inflamáveis.
